Engine repair options (Nissan Murano Z50)

When planning to carry out engine repairs, a home mechanic will be faced with the need to make a certain choice. The decision to replace the cylinder block, piston/connecting rod assemblies and crankshaft depends on many factors, the most important of which is the condition of the engine block cylinders. Other factors include cost, availability of specialist repair shops, time required to complete the repair, and previous experience with similar work.

Some of the alternative repair methods are described below:

• Replacement of individual parts - if the inspection has shown that the engine block cylinders and most of its components are in a condition that allows them to continue to be used, the most economical alternative would be to purchase only the necessary spare parts and components. The cylinders, crankshaft, pistons and connecting rods should be examined most carefully. Even if there is only minimal wear on the cylinder, the cylinder bores should be ground.
• Replacement of the piston group - if the inspection showed that all parts have significant wear. We recommend replacing the entire piston group with a new one, rather than purchasing parts individually. The factory-assembled piston group includes sets of: pistons, rings (compression and low-removability), piston pins, retaining rings.
• Replace the connecting rods as a set. If necessary, if the connecting rods are not deformed or mechanically damaged, the piston pin bushings can be replaced, but after replacement, the hole must be reamed to the required diameter (fit the piston pin).
• After a thorough inspection, the crankshaft must be replaced or reground to the next repair size.
• Carefully consider which option is best suited to your circumstances and discuss the situation with specialists from a workshop or auto store, as well as more experienced repairers, before ordering or purchasing replacement parts.
