Tools needed for this job include props to keep the vehicle up, a socket wrench to loosen the drain plug, a drain pan, newspapers and a clean rag. You should also prepare the required amount of gear oil.
Transmission oil drained when hot (i.e. immediately after driving); contaminants are more easily removed from hot oil. Work is best done with rubber gloves.
1. Jack up the vehicle and place it securely on jack stands. Try to keep the car as level as possible.
2. Place the necessary equipment under the vehicle, being careful not to touch the hot components of the exhaust system.
3. Place a drain pan under the transmission and remove the fill plug from the side of the transmission. Loosen the drain plug.
4. Carefully remove the drain plug. Be careful not to burn yourself with hot oil.
5. Let the oil drain completely. Clean the drain plug thoroughly, then install it and tighten it securely.
6. Read the instructions in Section Checking the oil level in the manual gearbox and fill the transmission with new oil, then install the filler cap and tighten it securely.
7. Lower the vehicle to the ground. After driving the first few kilometers, check if the drain plug is leaking.
