Diesel engines attract attention due to two main advantages over gasoline engines: fuel efficiency and lower content of harmful impurities in exhaust gases, which is due to the principle of operation of the diesel engine. The widespread use of diesel engines, especially for passenger cars, was restrained by specific disadvantages of diesel engines, in particular lower energy indicators, speed qualities, exhaust smoke, noise level, but these problems are being solved quite successfully.
The introduction of turbocharging made diesel engines fully competitive in terms of speed qualities and ensured the energy performance of diesel engines at a level close to that of gasoline engines of the same volume.
The problems of exhaust smoke, noise levels and stabilization of engine crankshaft speed at idle are successfully solved by introducing electronic control of the diesel engine, although the degree of implementation of such solutions is still weaker compared to gasoline engines, which is explained by both subjective factors (for example, the less widespread use of diesel engines for passenger cars), as well as objective factors (for example, the lower percentage of use of electrical elements in diesel engines and the greater difficulty of switching to electronic control of mechanical elements).
