2. Remove the lower engine compartment shield.
3. Remove the exhaust manifold bolts from the manifold or turbo generator.
4 Lower the front section of the exhaust pipe down as far as the flexible joint will allow.
5. Drain the engine oil (Chapter 2).
6. Unscrew the pan bolts. Remove it.
7. When installing in place, carefully remove all parts of the old gasket (early models) or sealant (late models) from the surfaces of the cylinder block crankcase and sump.
8. On early models, place a new gasket in the crankcase (photo), applying a bead of sealant to the gasket deflection points (Figure 1.12).

9. On T12 models produced after July 1986 and all T72 models, apply a continuous bead of 3.5-4.5 mm wide sealant completely around the oil pan mating surface. The ball should be located in the groove of the oil pan mating surface and inside the bolt hole as shown in Figure 1.13. Install new oil pump and oil seal retainer gaskets and install the oil pan.

10. Install the tray (photo) and tighten the bolts evenly in a diagonal pattern.

11. Further assembly is carried out in reverse order.
