The automatic transmission is installed on 1.8 and 2.0 liter models and includes a torque converter, which replaces the clutch on models with a manual transmission, and a pair of planetary gears, which are hydraulically driven by a multi-plate clutch and an auxiliary servo brake, to select three forward with a fourth overdrive gear, and a reverse gear. A differential is also built into the assembly.
The mechanism selector is installed in the central console and has six positions: "P" (Park), "R" (Reverse), "N" (Neutral), "D" (Drive), "2" and "1". The engine can only be started in positions "P" or "N" (preferably "P"). To prevent accidental starting of the engine in other positions, an inhibitor switch and a relay are installed, through which the starter is connected.
The transmission fluid is cooled through a heat exchanger. The contents of this Chapter are limited to service procedures that can be performed by the owner. Any repair work should be referred only to a Nissan dealer or an automatic transmission specialist who has the service facilities and skills required to perform such work.
