1. Lightly lubricate the gear engagement of the armature shaft and the engagement lever bearing with grease.
2. Lightly lubricate the bearing and gear with oil.
3. After assembly, clamp the starter in a vice and connect a 12-volt battery to the traction relay terminals "S" and "M" as shown in the illustration below.

4. When current is applied, the starter pinion jumps forward onto the thrust ring (3), but there should be a gap between the pinion and the thrust ring. Measure this gap with a flat feeler gauge or calipers. If the gap between the arrows is more than 3 mm, something in the starter is not installed correctly.
