Note: The instructions and warnings given below are in addition to those in Chapter 2 of this Section. Please read first before attempting any maintenance work Chapter 2 for information on basic safety precautions, then read this Chapter for information specific to fuel injection systems. See also Chapter 53 from this Section on precautions when working with a turbo generator.
1. Note that the fuel system consists of a fuel tank with cap and associated hoses, fuel pump and filter, fuel supply and return hoses, fuel rail, pressure regulator, injectors and other associated parts.
2. Most of the above mentioned parts contain fuel under pressure; always release residual pressure (Chapter 29), then wrap a paper towel or clean rag around the connection to prevent fuel from spraying out, and wear safety glasses.
3. Because the system operates at high fuel pressure, any leak can affect the efficiency of the system and pose a serious fire hazard. Also, because the intake air flow is critical to the operation of the system, even a small air leak can cause the air-fuel mixture to form incorrectly.
Note: The following precautions must be observed when working with the system:
(a) Do not disconnect the battery wiring while the engine is running.
(b) Before removing any system component, make sure the ignition is off and the negative battery cable is disconnected.
(c) The system wiring harness must be located at least 10 mm away from adjacent harnesses. This also applies to the antenna feeder cable.
(d) Make sure all wiring connections are tight and clean, as a loose connection can cause extreme high voltage fluctuations in the ignition coil, which can damage ignition system components.
(e) The accelerator pedal should not be depressed before the engine starts. Do not over-rev the engine immediately after starting, and do not over-rev it before turning it off.
(f) The idle speed adjustment screw is capped. Do not remove the cap on a vehicle still under warranty.
