Figure 7.14. Assembling the speedometer housing and drive
1. Open the hood, disconnect the speedometer drive cable from the transmission. See Section 12.
2. If required, the speedometer gear assembly can be removed separately. Loosen the mounting screw and pull the assembly up out of the housing.
3. To remove the speedometer housing, unscrew it and lift it out of the transmission, noting the O-ring and thrust washers. Remove the speedometer mechanism assembly, noting the two thrust washers at each end of the unit. Cover the opening with a clean rag to limit fluid loss.
4. If the speedometer drive or pinion is damaged, they can be replaced individually by knocking out the cylindrical pin that secures them to the shaft. Likewise, the pinion assembly can be removed by knocking out the cylindrical pin. Note the number of shims installed on the pinion.
5. Always replace O-rings and seals.
6. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. Lubricate the O-rings during installation and check that the gear teeth engage correctly. Tighten the bolts and screw to the specified tightening torque. Check the fluid level, top up if necessary (see Chapter 3 of this Section).
