Front wheel hub and steering knuckle 1. Steering knuckle; 2. Mud-deflecting shield; 3. Wheel hub and wheel bearing assembly; 4. Cotter pin.
Removal
Wheel hub and wheel bearing assembly
1. Remove the wheels from the vehicle.
2. Remove the wheel sensor from the steering knuckle. See chapter "Brake system".
Caution: Do not pull on the wheel sensor wiring.
3. Remove the locking plate from the stand. See chapter "Brake system".
4. Remove the mounting bolts from the caliper bracket. Hang the caliper bracket so that it does not interfere with your work. See Chapter "Brake system".
Caution: Do not press the brake pedal after removing the brake caliper.

5. Remove the brake disc.
Attention:
- Before removing the brake disc, make alignment marks on the brake disc and on the wheel hub and wheel bearing assembly.
- Do not drop the brake disc.
6. Remove the cotter pin, then loosen the hub lock nut.
7. Separate the wheel hub and wheel bearing assembly from the drive shaft by lightly tapping the end with a hammer using a wooden block, then unscrew the hub lock nut.

Attention:
- Do not bend the drive shaft joint to a large angle. Also, do not overstretch the sliding joint.
- Do not allow the drive shaft to hang without support from the housing (or a hinge node), shaft and other components.
Note: If after following the above procedure you are unable to separate the wheel hub and wheel bearing assembly from the drive shaft, use a suitable puller.
8. Remove the wheel hub and wheel bearing assembly.
Steering knuckle
1. Remove the wheel hub and wheel bearing assembly then the mud shield.
2. Separate the wishbone from the steering knuckle.
3. Remove the steering knuckle from the strut assembly.
4. Loosen the outer tie rod end nut.
5. Using a ball joint puller, remove the outer tie rod end (1) from the steering knuckle (2) without damaging the ball joint boot (3).
Caution: To avoid damaging the threads and the ball joint puller coming off, tighten the nut by hand.
6. Remove the steering knuckle from the vehicle.
Installation
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following:
Caution: If you reuse the brake disc, align the marks made during removal.
- Perform final tightening of all components removed together with the wheel hub and wheel bearing assembly and steering knuckle in an unloaded state of the vehicle.
Check after removal
Check for deformation, cracks or other damage on the components. Replace if necessary.
Checking the ball joint
Check for broken wishbone and ball joint boots on outer tie rod ends, for axial play, and also check the tightening torque. See below and chapter "Steering".
Post-installation check
- Check the front wheel alignment angles. See below.
- After checking the front wheel alignment angles, perform the steering angle sensor neutral position adjustment. See Chapter "Brake system".
Front Drive Shaft Covers
Removal
1. Drive shaft; 2 Cotter pin.
On the right side (mR20DE engine) 1. Cotter pin; 2. Drive shaft; 3. Plate; 4. Support bearing bracket.
Disassembly
On the left side (mR20DE engine) 1. Ring clamp; 2. Dust cover; 3. Body; 4. Retaining ring; 5. Crosspiece assembly; 6. Retaining ring (mR20DE engine); 7. Cover clamp; 8. Cover; 9. Shaft; 10. Dynamic shock absorber clamp; 11. Dynamic shock absorber; 12. Ring clamp; 13. Hinge assembly.

Replacement
From the wheel side
1. Remove the wheels from the vehicle.
2. Remove the wheel sensor from the steering knuckle. See chapter "Brake system".
Caution: Do not pull on the wheel sensor wiring.
3. Remove the locking plate from the stand. See chapter "Brake system".
4. Remove the mounting bolts from the caliper bracket. Hang the caliper bracket so that it does not interfere with your work. See Chapter "Brake system".
Caution: Do not press the brake pedal after removing the brake caliper.
5. Remove the brake disc.
Attention:
- Before removing the brake disc, apply alignment marks on the brake disc to the wheel hub and wheel bearing assembly.
- Do not drop the brake disc.
6. Remove the cotter pin, then loosen the hub lock nut.
7. Separate the wheel hub and wheel bearing assembly from the drive shaft by lightly tapping the end with a hammer, placing a wooden block underneath, then unscrew the hub lock nut.
Attention:
- Do not bend the drive shaft joint to a large angle. Also, do not overstretch the sliding joint.
- Do not allow the drive shaft to hang without support from the housing (or hinge assembly), shaft and other components.

Note: If the wheel hub cannot be separated from the drive shaft after following the above procedure, use a suitable puller.
8. Separate the wishbone from the steering knuckle.
9. Loosen the outer tie rod end nut.
10. Using a ball joint puller, remove the outer tie rod end (1) from the steering knuckle (2) without damaging the ball joint boot (3).

Caution: To avoid damaging the threads and the ball joint puller coming off, tighten the nut by hand.
11. Remove the drive shaft from the wheel hub and wheel bearing assembly.
12. Remove the clips from the boot, then remove the boot from the hinge assembly.
13. Thread the drive shaft puller (A) onto the threads of the joint assembly at least 30 mm. Supporting the drive shaft with one hand, remove the joint assembly from the shaft using the impact puller (B).

Attention:
- Align the impact puller and drive shaft and pull using firm, even pressure.
- If the joint assembly cannot be removed, try again after removing the drive shaft from the vehicle.
14. Remove the ring clamp (1) from the shaft (mR20DE engine).

15. Remove the cover from the shaft.
16. Wipe off old grease from the hinge assembly with paper towels.
17. Pack NISSAN genuine grease or equivalent into the spline hole of the ball joint assembly (1) until the spline hole and the groove of the ball joint are filled to the brim.

Caution: After applying the lubricant, wipe off the old leaked lubricant with a napkin.
18. To avoid damaging the cover, wrap the splined part of the shaft (mR20DE engine) with electrical tape (A). Place the new cover on the shaft and secure with clamps.

Caution: Do not reuse the cover and clips.
19. Remove the electrical tape wrapped around the splined portion of the shaft.
20. Place the ring clamp (1) into the groove on the end of the shaft.

Caution: Do not reuse the ring clamp.
Note: It is recommended to install the ring clamp using a mounting jig.
21. Center the shaft and hinge assembly.
- Then insert the shaft with the ring clamp into the hinge assembly.
22. Install the hinge assembly (1) onto the shaft (mR20DE engine) using a plastic hammer.
Caution: When turning the drive shaft, make sure that the hinge assembly is properly engaged.

23. Bring the amount of lubricant to the required level by stuffing it into the cover from the inside, on the wide side of the cover.
Standard
Amount of grease. See below. "Technical data and specifications".
24. Firmly secure the cover into the grooves (marked with "*") as shown in the figure.

Caution: If grease gets on the boot mounting surfaces (marked with "*") on the shaft or on the hinge assembly, the boot may come off. Remove all grease from the surfaces.
25. To avoid deformation of the cover, adjust the cover installation length to the required value ("L") specified below by inserting a flat-head screwdriver or similar tool under the cover from the wide side and releasing air from it.
Standard
Cover installation length ("L"): See below. "Technical data and specifications".
Attention:
- If the installation length of the cover is different from the standard, the cover may break.
- Do not touch the inside surface of the case with the tip of the screwdriver.
26. Using the tool for crimping the clamps of the covers (A) (special tool KV40107300) secure the wide and narrow sides of the cover with new clips.
Note: Fix the clamp so that the dimension "M" is equal to the one shown below.
Size "M": 1.0-4.0 mm
27. Secure the hinge assembly and shaft, then check that they are in the correct position by rotating the boot. If not, reinstall them using new boot clamps.


28. Insert the drive shaft into the wheel hub and wheel bearing assembly, then tighten the hub lock nut by hand.
Caution: The drive shaft is a press fit. When inserting the shaft, do not push it, but pull it by tightening the hub lock nut until it is completely seated.
29. Install the wishbone onto the steering knuckle. See chapter "Steering".
30. Install the outer tie rod end onto the steering knuckle. See Chapter "Steering".
31. Install the brake disc.
Caution: If you reuse the brake disc, align the marks made during removal.
32. Install the caliper bracket onto the steering knuckle. See Chapter "Brake system".
33. Install the locking plate to the stand. See chapter "Brake system".

34. Install the wheel sensor on the steering knuckle. See chapter "Brake system".
35. Tighten the hub lock nut to the specified torque.
36. Install the cotter pin.
Attention:
- Do not reuse the cotter pin.
- To avoid play, just tighten the cotter pin at the base.
37. Install the wheels on the car.
Front drive shafts (mR20DE engine)
Removal from the left side 1. Drive shaft; 2. Cotter pin.
Removal from the right side

Removal
On the left side
1. Perform operations 1-11 of paragraph "Replacement" above.
2. Remove the drive shaft from the gearbox assembly.
- Remove using attachment (A) to drive shaft (special tool: KV40107500) and an impact puller (B) by inserting the tip of the attachment between the housing and the gearbox.

Caution: Do not bend the drive shaft joint to a large angle when removing the drive shaft. Also, do not overstretch the sliding joint.
On the right side
1. Perform operations 1-11 of the "Replacement" item above.
2. Unscrew the plate bolts and remove the plate.
3. If necessary, loosen the support bearing bracket mounting bolts and remove the bracket.
4. Remove the drive shaft from the gearbox assembly.
- Remove using a drive shaft attachment (special tool. KV40107500) and an impact puller, inserting the tip of the attachment between the housing and the gearbox.
Caution: Do not bend the drive shaft joint to a large angle when removing the drive shaft. Also, do not overstretch the sliding joint.
Installation
On the left side
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following:
- To avoid damaging the seal when installing the drive shaft, install the guard (A) (special tool; KV381079000) to the gearbox.

- Insert the sliding joint into the water shaft and tap it securely with a hammer.
Caution: Make sure the ring clamp is fully engaged.
On the right side
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following:
- To avoid damaging the seal when installing the drive shaft, install the guard (A) (special tool KV381079000) to the gearbox.

- Insert the drive shaft sliding joint and tap it securely with a hammer.
- When installing the support bearing bracket (1):
Tighten the mounting bolts by hand in the order (A), (B).
Place the plate (2) so that the cutout (C) is on top. Tighten the mounting bolts by hand in the order (a) (b).

Caution: Do not reuse the plate.
Disassembly
From the gearbox side
1. Secure the shaft in a vice.
Caution: When clamping the shaft in a vice, protect it from damage by placing aluminum or copper strips.
2. Remove the clips from the case, then remove the case from the body.
3. Remove the retaining ring.
4. Apply alignment marks to the housing and shaft, then remove the housing from the shaft.
Caution: Apply marks with paint or similar substance. Do not scratch surfaces.
5. Place alignment marks (A) on the crosspiece assembly and shaft.

Caution: Apply marks with paint or similar substance. Do not scratch surfaces.
6. Remove the retaining ring (1), then remove the crosspiece assembly from the shaft.

7. Remove the cover from the shaft.
8. Remove the ring clamp from the shaft (on the left side).
9. Remove the dust cover from the housing.
10. Remove old grease from the body with paper towels.
Thrust bearing
1. Remove the dust cover from the housing.

2. Remove the retaining ring.

3. Press the support bearing out of the housing.
4. Remove the dust cover.

Dynamic shock absorber
Remove the clamps, then remove the dynamic shock absorber from the shaft.
From the wheel side
1. Secure the shaft in a vice.
Caution: When clamping the shaft in a vice, protect it from damage by placing aluminum or copper strips.
2. Remove the clips from the boot, then remove the boot from the hinge assembly.
3. Thread the drive shaft puller (A) onto the threads of the joint assembly at least 30 mm and remove the joint assembly from the shaft using the impact puller (B).

Attention:
- If the pivot assembly cannot be removed even after 5 attempts, replace the shaft and pivot assembly as a set.
- Align the impact puller and drive shaft and remove using right angle force.
4. Remove the ring clamp from the shaft.
5. Remove the cover from the shaft.
6. Remove old grease from the hinge assembly with paper towels by turning the collar.
Assembly
From the gearbox side
1. To avoid damaging the boot, wrap the splined portion of the shaft with electrical tape (A). Place the new boot on the shaft and secure with clamps.

Caution: Do not reuse the cover and clips.
2. Remove the electrical tape wrapped around the splined portion of the shaft.
3. Align the marks (A) on the shaft (2) when removing the crosspiece (1). Install the crosspiece assembly with the splined part (B) towards the drive shaft.

4. Secure the crosspiece assembly to the shaft with a retaining ring (1).

Caution: Do not reuse the retaining ring.
5. Apply the required amount of grease to the crosspiece assembly and sliding surface.
6. Install the housing onto the crosspiece assembly and apply grease to the amount specified below.
Standard.
Amount of grease: See below. "Technical data and specifications".
7. Align the alignment marks made when removing the housing.
8. Install the retaining ring.
Caution: Do not reuse the retaining ring.
9. Firmly fix the cover into the grooves (marked with "*") as shown in the figure.

Caution: If grease gets on the boot mounting surfaces (marked with "*") on the shaft or housing, the boot may come off. Remove all grease from the surfaces.
10. To avoid deformation of the cover, bring the cover installation length to the required value ("L") indicated below by inserting a flat-head screwdriver or similar tool under the cover from the wide side and releasing air from it.
Standard.
Cover installation length ("L"): See below. "Technical data and specifications".
Attention:
- If the installation length of the cover is different from the standard, the cover may break.
- Do not touch the inside surface of the case with the tip of the screwdriver.
11. Securely fasten the wide and narrow sides of the cover with new clips as shown in the picture.

Caution: Do not reuse the cover clips.
12. Secure the housing and shaft, then make sure they are in the correct position by rotating the boot. If not, reinstall them by installing new boot clamps.
13. Install the dust cover (on the left side).
Caution: Do not reuse the dust cover.
14. Install the ring clamp onto the body (on the left side).
Caution: Do not reuse the ring clamp.
Thrust bearing
1. Install the dust cover on the body.
Caution: Do not reuse the dust cover.
2. Press the support bearing onto the housing.

3. Install the retaining ring.
Caution: Do not reuse the retaining ring.
4. Install the dust covers.

Caution: Do not reuse dust caps.
Dynamic shock absorber
If the dynamic shock absorber is removed, secure it with new clamps as shown in the figure so that the dimensions correspond to those indicated below.

Caution: Do not reuse the case clips.

From the wheel side
Perform assembly following the steps in section "Replacing the drive shaft boot" above.
Check after removal
- Move the hinge up/down, left/right and axially. Make sure the movement is smooth and there is no significant play.
- Check the covers for cracks, damage and leaks.

- If there are any deviations from the norm, remove the drive shaft and replace the faulty components.
