Precautions when working with batteries
- The battery constantly releases hydrogen. When charging, more hydrogen is released. Hydrogen is highly explosive.
- Always disconnect the negative battery cable first and reconnect it last.
- Sulfuric acid is the basis of battery electrolyte. This acid is highly corrosive, corroding metals, damaging paint and fabric, and can cause serious injury if it comes into contact with eyes or skin. If electrolyte comes into contact with your skin, wash it off immediately with clean water.
- If electrolyte gets into your eyes, rinse them with water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention.
- If electrolyte is accidentally swallowed, immediately drink plenty of water or milk. Then drink magnesium, a raw egg or vegetable oil. Seek medical attention immediately.
- When working with or charging a battery, make sure the area is well ventilated.
- Never bring an open flame, a burning cigarette, or other objects that cause sparking close to the battery pack that is being charged or the engine is being started from the auxiliary battery pack.
- When checking and servicing the battery, always turn off the engine and all electrical consumers in the vehicle.
- Never interrupt the power supply circuit to the battery terminals. This can cause an arc to occur, which will ignite the hydrogen released from the battery.
- When working with batteries, wear safety glasses. When disconnecting battery cables or working near the battery, keep metal objects and tools away from the battery terminals. The resulting short circuit or spark may damage the battery or ignite the hydrogen gas near the battery.
- Never move the battery with the cell caps removed, as this can easily cause the electrolyte to spill out.
- Always use a battery carrier when lifting the battery or grasp the bottom edge of the battery with your hands.
- Cover the car body to prevent electrolyte splashes.
- Keep sharp objects away from the battery tray to avoid damaging the battery case and do not overtighten the battery fasteners.
