Note. Before removing the camshafts from the cylinder heads, the amount of axial play of their fit should be measured.
Removing
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
Attention! If the stereo system installed in the car is equipped with a security code, before disconnecting the battery, make sure that you have the correct combination to activate the audio system!
2. Remove cylinder head covers (see Section Removal and installation of covers of heads of cylinders).
3. Remove timing chains and sprockets (see Section Removing, checking the condition and installing the timing chain and sprockets).
4. Mark the camshaft bearing caps. Moving in the reverse order shown in the illustration, in 2 ÷ 3 steps, loosen the bolts securing the covers.
5. Remove the bearing caps and remove the camshafts from the cylinder heads.
Attention! Fold the removed covers in an organized manner - when assembling, they must be installed in exactly their original positions. Pay attention to the presence of identification markings on the shafts.
6. Take from heads of cylinders pushers in gathering with the adjusting washers installed on them.
Attention! Fold the pushers removed from the engine in an organized manner - during assembly, they must be installed strictly in their original places.
Installation
1. Install the valve lifters complete with shims strictly in their original places.
2. Lubricate the cams and bearing journals of the camshafts with molybdenum grease.
3. Insert the shafts into their original positions in the respective cylinder heads and turn them with the guide pins up and parallel to the cylinder bank.
4. Apply RTV sealant to the mating surface of the first bearing caps.
5. Install the bearing caps, screw in and hand-tighten the bolts of their fastening.
6. Moving in a strictly defined order, tighten the bearing cap bolts in several stages with the required force.
7. Reinstall timing components (chains and sprockets) (see Section Removing, checking the condition and installing the timing chain and sprockets). Blocking the camshafts from turning with an open-end wrench, tighten the sprocket mounting bolts with the required force.
8. Further installation is carried out in the reverse order to the dismantling of the components. If valvetrain components have been replaced, check and adjust valve clearances (see Section Checking and adjusting valve clearances).
