Attention! This description applies only to removable gearboxes that are mounted in the axle beam. Some vehicles are equipped with a non-separable rear axle, the repair of which is performed only in a car service.
1. Raise the rear of the vehicle.
2. Drain the oil from the gearbox.
3. Disconnect the rear part of the propeller shaft from the gearbox.
4. Remove both axle shafts from the differential gearbox (you don't have to remove the axle shafts).
5. Evenly and gradually, in a diagonal sequence, unscrew the gearbox housing bolts and remove the gearbox (photo).
15.5 Unscrewing the rear axle gearbox bolts
6. Special equipment and tools are required to repair the gearbox. Repairing this unit at home is beyond the scope of this description. Therefore, if abnormal operation of the gearbox was noted, it should be replaced, which is more cost-effective.
7. Remove any remaining old gasket and install a new gasket.
8. Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
9. Fill the gearbox with oil (Ch. 1).
