Attention! For front axle maintenance, see Ch. 9
On vehicles, a two-section cardan shaft with an average support and three cardan joints is installed on the side of the gearbox, rear axle gearbox and on the middle support. The hinges can be replaced individually. The cardan shaft is balanced at the factory; during assembly, it is not allowed to violate its original orientation relative to other parts.
The rear axle consists of a beam, a gearbox and axle shafts. The gearbox transmits rotation from the cardan shaft to the wheels and is installed in the middle part of the bridge. The axle shafts have splined internal ends, which are inserted into the splines of the drive gears of the gearbox differential. The outer ends of the axle shafts rotate in the bearings of the rear wheels. Disassembly and repair of the gearbox are carried out in a car service.
