Removal and installation of the pump
1. Drain the coolant as described in Chapter Ongoing care and maintenance.
2. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
3. At the same time, press the belt with your hand so that the pulley does not turn.
4. Loosen the alternator mounting bolts on the alternator and mounting bracket and remove the V-belt.
5. Unscrew the water pump pulley completely.
6. Unscrew the water pump and remove it. Immediately carefully remove any remaining sealant from the pump and cylinder block with a scraper.
Check water pump for bearing damage or wear. The shape of the belt pulley on these engines may vary.
7. Holding the pump in one hand, turn the belt pulley hub with the other hand as shown in the illustration above. If the bearing is in poor condition, uneven movement will be felt in the hand. In this case, the pump should always be replaced. The impeller on the inside of the pump must be free of rust. When installing the water pump, apply a bead of sealant 2-3 mm thick around the entire perimeter of the sealing surface and install the pump in reverse order. Finally, fill in coolant and check for leaks. Adjust the belt tension as described in Chapter Ongoing care and maintenance.
