Examination
Note. The correct functioning of the VSS can be checked by the adequacy of the speedometer readings.
1. Remove the VSS from the transmission case.
2. Connect a voltmeter to the two terminals of the sensor and switch the meter to AC voltage measurement mode. Start manually rotating the drive gear of the sensor - the voltmeter should register a signal with an amplitude of about 0.5 V.
3. If there is no signal voltage, the sensor must be replaced.
4. If the above test is positive, check for an open in the wiring in the section of the circuit between the VSS connector and the instrument panel (see wiring diagrams at the end of the Chapter Onboard electrical equipment). If the wiring is OK, drive the vehicle to a workshop to have the PCM diagnosed and repaired accordingly.
Replacement
1. Jack up the car and put it on stands.
2. Disconnect the wiring from the speed sensor.
3. With the pinch bolt removed, loosen the clamp and remove the VSS from the transmission.
4. Check up a condition of a landing sealing ring of the gauge, in case of need make replacement.
5. Installation is carried out in the reverse order.
