2. Loosen the flywheel mounting bolts (torque converter drive disk) to the crankshaft, bending the lock washers and resting the screwdriver against the toothed ring to prevent it from turning (photo).
21.2 Removing the flywheel
3. Carefully remove the flywheel from the crankshaft.
4. Unscrew the bolts and remove the rear engine reinforcement plate (photo). Check for oil leaks through the rear plugs. On 4x4 vehicles, apply sealant.

5. Check the integrity of the crown teeth; if there is severe damage, replace the flywheel (disk).
6. The procedure for checking the flywheel is described in Chapter 8.
7. Clean the mating surfaces of the crankshaft and flywheel.
8. Install the reinforcement plate.
9. Install the flywheel, replacing the lining.
10. Tighten the bolts in a cross pattern.
11. The remaining operations are performed in reverse order.
