Cardan shafts — general information (Nissan Patrol Y60)

Cardan shafts are double tubular sleeves equipped with universal (cardan) hinges with flanges on the outer crosspiece holders at both ends of the shaft. (see accompanying illustration).

• When the front and rear axles move vertically while the vehicle is in motion, the length of the propeller shaft is varied accordingly by using a splined sliding joint at one end of the assembly.
• The cardan joint consists of a crosspiece, four needle roller bearings with retaining rings and cups secured to them.
• Front driveshaft on models with Utility and Mini truck bodies (Cab Chassis) equipped with a double cardan joint, which is an assembly of two universal joints. If the double cardan joint is obviously worn or damaged, the shaft must be replaced as a set.
• When repairing universal (cardan) joints, it is important to ensure that the relative positions of all flanges, holders and sleeves are clearly marked during disassembly - when reassembling, they must be installed exactly in their previous positions.
