Table of contents: With a 1.6 liter engine ↓ With a 2.0 liter engine ↓
This manual covers Nissan Primera cars with 1.6 and 2.0 liter engines since 1990. Primera is a successor to Bluebirds and was created by Nissan in England. All engines have a 16-valve valve timing mechanism. The differences inside individual engines mainly concern the preparation of the working mixture. The cars covered in this manual have a body type of a four-door sedan or a five-door coupe (hatchback). The entire series has a serial number "P10". Station wagons have a different design. The 1.6 liter engine belongs to the "GA16" group and is equipped with one two-chamber carburetor with a falling flow. The differences mainly appear in the 2.0 liter engines. Both engines belong to the "SR20" group, but the letters following the group designation carry information about the installed fuel system. The engine with less power is equipped with a central injection system and has the designation "SR20Di". The more powerful engine has a multi-position injection system and is designated "SR20DE".
This Manual covers the following vehicle models:
With a 1.6 liter engine
1.6-litre models, 1597 cm³, 90 hp/66 kW, saloon, GA16DS engine, with carburetor. Depending on the country of destination, the car is produced with the model designation "L", "LX" or "SLX". All cars with this engine are equipped with a 5-speed gearbox as standard. The stated power applies to cars with a catalytic converter. If the catalytic converter is not installed, the engine has a power of 95 hp (70 kW) at 6000 rpm.
5-door hatchback models with this engine are only available in certain countries and have the same designation.
With a 2.0 liter engine
2.0 liters, 1998 cm³, 115 hp/85 kW at 6000 rpm, sedan, engine "SR20D". Depending on the country of destination, the car has the designations "LX", "SLX" or "SGX". In certain countries, hatchback models with the same designation are sold. The car is equipped with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. All models are equipped with a catalytic converter.
2.0 liters, 1998 cm³ 150 hp/110 kW, saloon or hatchback, engine "SR20DE". This engine is only available in the "GT" version with a 5-speed gearbox. These cars are equipped with a catalytic converter with lambda control as standard.
All engines have four cylinders with two overhead camshafts and 16 valves, which are actuated by one or two timing chains (depending on the engine) from the crankshaft.
Each cylinder has 4 valves at an angle of 26°, which may or may not have hydraulic clearance compensators. The cylinder block of 2-liter engines is made of light alloys.
Both engines use pistons of different sizes and strokes, meaning that the volume of an individual cylinder is not achieved by boring the block. The engine is mounted at the front of the car, transverse to the direction of travel.
The chassis consists of a load-bearing body structure and independent front and rear wheel suspension. The front wheel suspension of the sedan and coupe is a multi-link suspension with a lower wishbone, an upper diagonal arm with a hinge, as well as coil springs and telescopic shock absorbers. An anti-roll bar is installed as standard. The rear wheel suspension of the sedan and coupe consists of shock absorber struts with double lower arms and a longitudinal arm. An anti-roll bar is installed as standard on all models. In station wagon models (which are not covered in this publication) the front wheels are suspended using shock absorber struts with triangular transverse levers and the rear suspension is on longitudinal levers, with coil springs and a transverse rod.
As already mentioned, a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission is installed.
Models with a 1.6-liter engine have front disc brakes and rear drum brakes, while models with a 2.0-liter engine have disc brakes on the front and rear wheels. The braking system is divided into two circuits, front and rear, and is equipped with a brake force regulator. ABS can be installed on certain 2-liter models. The handbrake acts on the rear wheels.
The car has a rack and pinion steering system, which is equipped with hydraulic booster as standard.
