2. Open the hood, disconnect and remove the battery and unscrew the battery tray bolts (photo) to gain access to the left engine/transmission mount.

3. Remove the left front engine compartment guard and the left fender liner.
4. Drain the transmission oil.
5. On 1.6 liter models, disconnect the speedometer drive cable and the clutch cable from the transmission.
6. On Turbo models, loosen the clamps securing the vent pipe system and jet muffler assembly to the air flow meter and turbo generator, unscrew the assembly and disconnect the breather hose from the valve. Remove the assembly, plug the air flow meter and turbo generator inlets.
7. On 1.8 liter models (including Turbo) and 2.0 liter models, lock the clutch pedal so that it cannot be pressed accidentally, unscrew the bolt from the clutch slave cylinder (and a heat-resistant shield on Turbo models) on the front of the clutch housing. Remove the spring clamp, release the hydraulic pipe and/or flexible hose from the transmission hanger, unscrew the slave cylinder assembly (photo). Disconnect the speedometer drive cable and the gear assembly.
7.7A. Models 1.8 (including Turbo) and 2.0 liters - move the radiator hose to the side and unscrew the clutch slave cylinder...
7.7V... remove the spring clip, disconnect the flexible hose from the transmission...
7.7C... and unscrew the suspension from the inner wing panel
8. On all models, disconnect the ground wire attached to one of the transmission housing bolts, disconnect the reverse lamp switch wiring (photo).

9. Block the rear wheels and lift the front of the car.
10. Separate the outer ball joints of the steering rod from the hub carrier, loosen the nuts of the upper suspension strut mount, unscrew the three nuts of the installation plate, separate each ball joint from the lower arm. Unscrew the three bolts of the right drive shaft bearing (1.8 and 2.0 liter models only). Disconnect the drive shaft.
11. Disconnect the gear selector control from the transmission.
12. Support the transmission with a jack or winch.
13. Remove all bolts and nuts securing the transmission to the engine. Also, the clutch housing bolts, starter mount bolts, and on fuel-injected (non-Turbo) models, the bolts securing the intake manifold to the transmission.

14. Remove the starter from the clutch housing.
15. The left engine/transmission assembly consists of two main parts; one is bolted to the inner wing group, the other to the transmission (photo). Unscrew the tie bolt and nut that secure the unit.

16. Remove the transmission from the engine by lifting it off the mounting pins. Lower the transmission under the vehicle and remove it from there.
17. Installation is carried out in reverse order, please pay attention to the following points:
- (a) Tighten all nuts and bolts to the torque specified in Specifications.
- (b) Adjust the clutch and check its operation.
- (c) Fill the gearbox with oil.
