1. On all engines considered in this Manual, a single-section rear crankshaft oil seal is used, which is placed in the socket of a special holder, which in turn is attached to the block. Before bolting the holder with the new oil seal installed in it to the engine, reinstall the crankshaft and main bearing caps / their connecting bridge.
2. Carefully inspect the seal-to-gland surface of the shaft stud for scratches, nicks, or other imperfections that could cause failure of the new seal. Replace damaged shaft.
3. Measure the original seating depth of the old oil seal in the holder socket, then lay the holder plate with the edges on a pair of wooden blocks of equal height, and using a suitable drift and hammer, knock the old oil seal out of its socket. Try not to damage the walls of the nest.
4. Wipe the holder thoroughly, then lubricate the outer edge of the new oil seal with clean engine oil. The gland must be planted in the socket strictly perpendicular, so it is not recommended to tap it into the holder with a hammer. In the absence of access to a press, the gland can be filled into the socket using a large vise with soft jaws. The holder with the stuffing box must be clamped between two flat wooden blocks, ensuring uniform distribution of the load over the entire area of the end surface of the stuffing box. In extreme cases, the use of a hammer is allowed, but the tapping must be done through a flat wooden block. Act slowly, make sure that there is no distortion.
5. Before putting on assembly of the holder with an epiploon on a pin of a cranked shaft, grease sponges of an epiploon with universal greasing. On the engines in question, the holder sits on the engine without a gasket - instead, an even pad of RTV sealant should be applied to its mating surface. Do not forget to install guide pins in their regular places.
6. Pressing the holder close to the block, hand-tighten the bolts of its fastening, make sure that the holder is installed correctly, then tighten the bolts with the required force.
