All vehicles covered in this guide have a 12-volt electrical system. The ground connection is through the negative terminal of the battery. The battery is located in the engine compartment.
A starter with forced engagement of the pinion serves to start the engine. The starter switch is a component of the ignition switch and when turned on, it excites the traction relay located on the starter. Depending on the model, the starter has either a direct drive on the flywheel ring gear (1.6L engine), or the drive on the toothed rim of the drive disk is carried out through a reduction gear. Both starters are manufactured by Magnetti-Marelli.
Only models with a 1.6-liter engine are equipped with direct-drive starters, and even among these models there are exceptions. The installed generator has a capacity of 80 A (2L engine, BOSCH) or 67 A (1.6 l engine, Magnetti-Marelli). The generator is driven by a multi-ribbed belt from the crankshaft. The voltage regulator serves to regulate the charging current and is located on the rear cover.
