- If the vehicle will not be used for more than 2 months, the battery should be removed and stored in a charged state. The battery should be stored at temperatures between 0 and 27°C. At these temperatures, the battery's self-discharge rate will be minimal. After 2 months of storage, the battery should be charged, otherwise it cannot be used.
If you charge a discharged battery with a fast charger after a long period of storage, in some cases it will not accept the charging current, or due to the so-called surface charge, it will be considered charged too early. Such a battery is most likely discharged.
Before deciding whether the battery is faulty, it is necessary to check it as follows:
- Check the density of the electrolyte. If the density in all the jars differs by no more than 0.03 g/ml, then the battery must be charged using a normal charger.
- After charging, check the battery under load (this operation is described above). In the workshop, a special device is used for this check. In this case, the values indicated in the table below must be achieved. If the voltage on the battery during testing is below 9.0 V, it is considered faulty.
- If the density of the electrolyte in one or two adjacent cells of the battery differs significantly from the density of the electrolyte in other cells (for example, in 5 jars the density is 1.16 g/ml, and in one jar it is 1.08 g/ml), then there is a short circuit in the battery or it is faulty.
- Charge a deeply discharged and sulfated battery (as described above).
