Engine adjustments are becoming more and more important every year to ensure the lowest possible emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere.
If the routine maintenance schedule has been followed scrupulously since the vehicle was purchased, and fluid levels and wear parts have been checked frequently, as suggested in this manual, the engine will be in relatively good operating condition and the need for additional work will be minimal.
However, it is more likely that the engine will perform poorly at times due to a lack of regular maintenance. This probability increases even more if the car was purchased used and did not previously have regular and frequent technical inspections.
In such cases, engine adjustments must be performed in addition to regular maintenance.
It is recommended to follow a certain sequence of adjustment procedures. The adjustment consists of three stages:
- Analysis is the process of determining whether the decrease in performance is due to normal wear and tear or whether parts need to be replaced or repaired.
- Replacement of parts - removal of worn and broken parts.

Troubleshooting is a logical sequence of procedures designed to determine the true cause of a malfunction. Maintenance usually involves two stages: diagnostics and repair. Very often the cause of a malfunction is wear or damage to parts. In this case, there are no special problems in troubleshooting. The first step is to identify the problem and its cause. Once the cause has been identified, refer to the appropriate section in this manual for repair, replacement or adjustment. The first step in most diagnostic and adjustment operations is checking the cylinder compression, which provides important information about the condition of the engine and its systems.
If, for example, a compression test indicates severe wear on internal engine components, then traditionally performed adjustments will not improve the engine's condition, but will simply be a waste of time and money. Because of its importance, the test must be performed by a professional with the appropriate equipment, knowledge, and ability to properly apply both.
