- Most of these checks can be done while driving by simply paying attention to a few things. The checks are designed to protect the driver from potential problems before they arise,
- Make sure the ignition key cannot be removed when the transmission is in any gear other than "PARK." Make sure the steering column locks when the key is removed from the ignition. It may be necessary to turn the steering wheel slightly to lock the steering column.
- Check the parking brake. The easiest way to do this is to stop the car on a steep hillside. Apply the parking brake and see if it holds the car in place.
- You also need to check the parking mechanism. Put the transmission in Parking, release the parking brake and check if the CVT holds the car in place. If the car moves in Park, the CVT should be repaired in a workshop.
- Check to see if the gear shift indicator is showing the correct gear. If not, adjust the variator ranges as described in the relevant section.
- Check the variator operating ranges:
♦ Set the selector lever to the "P" range and turn on the ignition. Do not start the engine.
♦ Check that the selector lever can be moved to positions other than "P" when the brake pedal is depressed. Also check that the selector lever can be moved from position "P" only when the brake pedal is depressed.
♦ Move the selector lever and check whether it requires excessive force, whether there is any sticking, noise or crackling.
♦ When the selector lever is moved through all ranges (positions), make sure that it stops in each range. Check that the actual position of the selector lever matches the position indicated on the CVT range indicator and the pointer on the CVT housing with the drive axle.
♦ Check that the reversing lights come on when the selector lever is moved to the "R" range. Make sure that the reversing lights do not come on when the selector lever from the "P" or "N" range is pressed in the direction of the "R" range.
♦ Make sure that the engine can only be started when the selector lever is in the "P" and "N" ranges.
♦ Make sure the transmission is fully locked in the "P" position.
- Make sure the brakes do not pull the vehicle to one side when braking. The brake pedal should feel firm, but you shouldn't have to apply too much force to stop the car. If the pedal "fails", you need to press it several times, or the force applied to the pedal is too high, repair the brake system. A squeaking sound coming from the front brakes could be caused by brake pad wear indicators. Replace the pads.
- Rear view mirrors must be clean and undamaged. Once adjusted, they should hold their position. Sun visors should also hold their position after adjustment and should remain securely in place when removed from the windshield.
- Make sure the heater is blowing warm air onto the windshield. If not, service your heating system according to the relevant chapter in our book.
- The horn should produce a clear sound each time it is pressed.
- Make sure the windows are clean and undamaged.
- Turn on the exterior lights and walk around the vehicle to make sure they work. Check the operation of both the low and high beam headlights. Check the operation of the turn signals first on one side of the car, then on the other. If possible, have an assistant check to see if the brake lights come on when you press the brake pedal. If you don't have an assistant, you can check your brake lights by backing up to a wall or garage door and pressing the brake pedal. When you press the brake pedal, there should be three distinct red flashes.
- Make sure the locks operate smoothly when turning the keys. If necessary, lubricate the locks with a special lock lubricant. Make sure the locks are securely locked.
- On models with airbags, each time the vehicle is started, the airbag warning light on the dashboard should come on for a few seconds and then go out. During this period, the airbag system performs a self-test. If the warning light does not come on or continues to flash while driving, take the vehicle to a repair shop for diagnosis. If the indicator lamp flashes in a repetitive pattern while the vehicle is moving, record the number of flashes. This will be a code represented by several flashes. This code will be useful for the diagnostic workshop technician, especially in connection with airbag problems.
