Front airbags
These airbags are designed to cushion the face and chest of the driver and front passenger in a frontal vehicle collision.
Note: The front passenger airbag can be disabled. See below «Front passenger airbag deactivation indicator»
Side airbags (if any)
These airbags are designed to cushion the chest of the driver and front passenger in a side impact vehicle. In the event of an accident, only the side airbag on the side of the collision is inflated.
Air curtains (if any)
Designed to protect the head of the front and rear extreme passengers. In the event of an accident, only the side curtain on the side of the collision is inflated.
Airbags only supplement the driver's and front passenger's seat belts, but do not replace them. The driver and passengers must always wear seat belts. It is important that the driver and front passenger are positioned in their respective places at a sufficient distance from the steering wheel and instrument panel, as well as from the front doors and side pillars, respectively.
The airbag malfunction indicator lamp comes on when the ignition key is turned to the ON or START position. If the airbags are working properly, the warning light should go out after about seven seconds. See p. «Airbag warning lamp», as well as p. «Control lamps, indicators and sound signaling devices» In chapter «Dashboard and controls».
The airbags are ready to operate when the ignition key is in the ON or START position.

Front airbags
The driver's and front passenger's airbag modules are respectively integrated into the steering wheel hub and the dash above the glovebox. The airbags should only deploy in severe frontal impacts. However, airbags may also deploy in other situations if the vehicle is subjected to impacts similar to those experienced in a severe frontal impact.
The airbags may not deploy in a certain frontal impact. The deployment of the front airbags is accompanied by a strong pop and the release of smoke. Smoke is not harmful to humans, and its appearance does not indicate a fire, however, they should not be breathed in order to avoid irritation of the respiratory tract and spasm in the throat, people suffering from respiratory diseases should quickly get out into fresh air.
Vehicles equipped with side airbags and side curtain airbags (if any)
Side airbag modules integrated into the front seatbacks (from the side of the door) Side air curtains are located under the headlining above the door openings. Side airbags and curtain airbags should only deploy in severe side impacts. However, airbags may also deploy in other crashes if the vehicle is subjected to impacts similar to those experienced in a severe side impact. In an accident, only the airbags on the side of impact deploy. The airbags may not deploy in a certain frontal impact.
When the side airbags and curtain airbags inflate, there is a strong pop and smoke. Smoke is not harmful to humans, and its appearance does not indicate a fire. However, they should not be inhaled to avoid irritation of the respiratory tract and spasm in the throat. People suffering from respiratory diseases should quickly get out into the fresh air.
Side airbags, used in conjunction with seat belts, help reduce the damaging effects on the chest of the driver and front passenger. Curtain airbags are designed to protect the heads of the front and rear outer passengers. Airbags and curtains can save lives or reduce the severity of injury in a crash. However, the envelope of the side airbag or curtain airbag can cause facial abrasions or other injuries. Side airbags and curtain airbags do not protect the lower body.
Airbag warning lamp
The control lamp located on the dashboard allows you to monitor the condition of the electrical circuits of the airbag system and the pyrotechnic seat belt pretensioners. In addition, the control lamp provides the ability to monitor the health of the diagnostic unit and sensors, front airbag modules, side airbag modules (if any), air curtain modules (if any), shock sensors, pyrotechnic belt tensioners and related wiring.
The airbag malfunction indicator lamp comes on when the ignition key is turned to the ON position. If the airbags are working properly, the warning light should go out after approx. 7 seconds.
If any of the following conditions occur, the front/side airbag system (if any), window blinds (if any) and pretensioners in need of repair:
- The control lamp continues to burn 7 seconds after switching on the ignition.
- The airbag warning lamp flashes.
- The Airbag Malfunction Indicator Lamp does not illuminate
Under the specified conditions, front, side airbags (if any) and window curtains (if any) and/or seat belt pretensioners may not work. Appropriate repairs need to be made.
Repair and replacement of system elements
The main elements of the airbag system (front, side airbags and air curtains) and pyrotechnic pretensioners are disposable devices. After the airbags have been deployed, the control lamp lights up and is constantly on, reminding you of the need to replace the system elements.
Front passenger airbag deactivation indicator
The illustration shows the variant for left-hand drive models
The front passenger airbag deactivation indicator located on the center console comes on when the ignition key is turned to the ON position and should go out after approx. 7 seconds. This behavior of the indicator means that the system is working properly.
This indicator informs about the status of the front passenger airbag. If the airbag is disabled, the indicator will come on and stay on while the front passenger airbag is in the disabled state.
Deactivation of the front passenger airbag
Ⓐ Vehicles equipped with «Intelligent Key»
Ⓑ Vehicles not equipped with «Intelligent Key»
To install a rearward facing child seat, the front passenger front airbag must first be deactivated on the front passenger seat, as follows:
- 1. Set the ignition switch to the LOCK position (engine off) and open the passenger door
- 2. Insert the main or spare ignition key (for vehicles equipped with «Intelligent Key») into the front passenger's front airbag deactivation switch, which is located on the right side of the center console. Press the key and turn it to the OFF position
- 3. Turn the key in the ignition switch to the ON position and check that the airbag deactivation indicator is on.
If the indicator stays on, it means that the passenger's front airbag has been deactivated.
Front passenger airbag activation
If you do not intend to use a child seat in the front seat, you must reactivate the front passenger airbag.
To activate the front passenger airbag, do the following:
- 1. Set the ignition switch to the LOCK position (engine off) and open the passenger door.
- 2. Insert the main or spare ignition key (for vehicles equipped with «Intelligent Key») the front passenger's front airbag switch and turn the key to the ON position.
- 3. Turn the key in the ignition switch to the ON position and check that the airbag deactivation indicator lights up for a few seconds and then goes out.
