Rear Drum Brakes — Pad Replacement (Nissan Terrano 1)

1. Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it on stands. Release the handbrake.

2. Remove the wheel.

3. If necessary, move the pads together using the adjuster (Ch. 1)

4. Remove the drum by rotating the drum and tapping it with a soft-faced hammer in an outward direction. If the drum cannot be removed, move it by evenly screwing the M8x1.25 bolts into the special threaded holes (photo).



5. Carefully clean the drum from dust and dirt.

6. Remove the brake shoe pressure springs by pressing on the cap and turning it 90° (photo).



7. Remove the upper brake shoe tension springs (photo).







8. Spread the pads and remove the spacer (photo).



9. Additionally, spread the pads and remove them from the grooves in the regulator and pistons. Secure the pistons from sliding out of the cylinders (so as not to bleed the hydraulic drive during assembly).

10. Disconnect the handbrake cable from the lever.

11. Do not press the brake pedal, otherwise the pistons will come out of the cylinder.

12. Check the condition of the cylinder boots and the presence of fluid leaks. Repair or replace the cylinders if necessary.

13. Lubricate the brake shoe adjuster threads with brake fluid.

14. Before assembly, lightly lubricate the friction areas of the pads with brake grease, avoiding contact with rubber parts.



15. Install the springs, insert the lower end of the rear shoe into the regulator groove, then the lower end of the front shoe, move the shoes apart and insert them into the wheel cylinder piston grooves. Install the remaining parts (photo).



16. Install the drum and wheel.



17. Adjust the clearance between the shoes and drums by raising and lowering the handbrake lever several times. If necessary, bleed the brakes. Lower the car.
