- With the engine idling, position the front wheels parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle (with the power steering operating).
- By turning the steering wheel slightly in both directions until the front wheels begin to turn, measure the free play (play) of the steering wheel along its rim. The maximum permissible value is 35 mm.
- If the steering wheel play exceeds the maximum permissible value, check for clearances in the steering shaft and steering rod connections. Repair or replace worn parts.
- If after this the steering wheel play still exceeds the maximum permissible value, then set the front wheels parallel to the longitudinal axis of the car with the engine not running.
- Attach the spring tensioner to the steering wheel rim.
- Apply a force of 5 N in the direction of rotation of the steering wheel rim and check for play. Nominal value (with the engine not running) is 10 mm or less.
If the backlash exceeds the nominal value, remove the steering gear and check the torque of resistance to rotation of the gear.
