Checking the valve guides (Nissan Sunny B13)

When repairing a cylinder head with leaky valves, it is not enough to treat or replace the valves and seats. In addition, the valve guides should be checked for wear. This is especially important for engines with high mileage. Worn guides do not guarantee a central valve seat and lead to high oil consumption. If the wear is too great, the valve guides should be replaced (is done in the workshop).

1. Remove the valve.

2. Clean the valve guide with a cylindrical brush.



3. Insert the valve into the guide from the combustion chamber side and measure the clearance by moving the valve from side to side. The valve clearance should be measured parallel to the corresponding rocker arm, since the greatest wear occurs in this direction.

4. To check, apply a steel ruler. There should be virtually no gap. Limit value: 0.2 mm.

5. If you have a micrometer and bore gauge, you can measure the actual clearance between the guide and the valve stem.

6. Replace the guide if necessary (is done in the workshop).

Caution! Never install a guide of the same diameter again.
