Excessive oil consumption can be caused by worn valve stem caps. The valve stem caps can be removed without removing the cylinder head, but a special tool is required. If a special tool is not available, the cylinder head must be removed.
Removal
1. Remove the cylinder head.
2. Remove the valves.
3. Remove the valve stem caps. Pliers are required for removal. For engines with plate tappets, workshops use special devices. Old caps are usually very tightly seated. Therefore, an impact puller should be used for removal if possible.
Caution! Do not use a screwdriver to remove it, as this may damage the seat of the cap.
Installation
1. Before installing the valves, check the valve guides and possibly machine or lap the valve seats.
2. Lightly lubricate new valve stem caps (3) and place onto valve guides (4).
3. Place the cap with a suitable mandrel (1) until it stops (2 – valve spring plate). Distance 5 should be: 15.2 mm.
Caution! If there is no special mandrel, install the cap using a hammer and a suitable tube. The tube must have the same diameter as the cap and must not have sharp edges.
4. Insert the valve springs with the upper and lower plates and compress. The narrow end of the spring should be facing the cylinder head.
5. Insert conical crackers, release valve springs.
6. Replace all valve stem caps in the same manner.
7. Install the valves.
8. Install the cylinder head.
