Checking the engine oil level
Note. Check the oil level on horizontally mounted vehicles before starting the engine. If the engine has already been started, stop it and wait 10 minutes before starting the test.
1. Remove the dipstick and wipe it dry.
2. Insert the dipstick, remove it again and check that the oil level is within the range shown in the figure (A).
Gasoline engines
Diesel engines
3. If the oil level is outside the specified range, correct it.
Evaluation of the appearance of the oil
Check the oil for whitishness or heavy contamination.
If the oil has acquired a whitish color, then there is a high probability that coolant has entered the oil. Repair or replace defective parts.
Checking the lubrication system for leaks
Check for oil leaks at the following locations:
- oil pans (upper and lower).
- Drain plug in the pan.
- Oil pressure sensor.
- Oil level sensor.
- Oil filter.
- Oil radiator.
- Folding valve for the intake camshaft shifter.
- Front engine cover.
- The joint between the cylinder head and the camshaft holders.
- The joint between the cylinder head and the cylinder head cover.
- Oil seals (front and rear) crankshaft.
Engine oil pressure check
Attention.
- Be careful not to get burned (oil may be hot).
- To check the oil pressure, place the gearshift lever in neutral position (position «parking» for automatic transmission or CVT) and securely tighten the parking brake lever.
1. Check the oil level.
2. Disconnect the oil pressure sensor connector and remove the sensor from the cylinder block using an end nozzle.
Engine HR16DE:
1. Cylinder block.
2. Oil pressure sensor connector.
Engine MR20DE:
1. Oil pressure sensor connector.
2. Oil filter.
3. Lower oil pan.

Note. The arrow points to the front of the engine.
Attention. Do not drop or subject the oil pressure sensor to impact.
3. Connect pressure gauge (petrol engines: 8125051001 (J-25695-1) (A) with hose (IN) ST25052000 (J-25695-2); diesel engine: KV113E0020 (Mot. 836-05)).
4. Start and warm up the engine to normal operating temperature.
5. Measure the pressure when the engine is running without load.
Note.
- At low oil temperatures, the pressure in the lubrication system increases.
- Oil pressure values are given in section «Service data and specification» at the end of the chapter.
If there is a large discrepancy, check the oil passages and the pump for leaks.
6. After checking, install the oil pressure sensor in place:
- Remove any old sealant from the pressure sensor and mounting surface.
- Apply new sealant and tighten sensor.
Note. Use original sealant or equivalent.
Warm up the engine and check that there are no oil leaks while the engine is running.
Engine oil change
Attention.
- Be careful not to get burned (oil may be hot).
- Prolonged and repeated contact with used engine oil can cause skin cancer; direct contact with used oil must be avoided. If this does happen, wash the affected area thoroughly with soap or hand cleanser as soon as possible.
1. Warm up the engine and check its components for oil leaks.
2. Stop the engine and wait 10 minutes.
3. Loosen the oil filler cap and unscrew the drain plug.
4. Drain the oil from the engine.
5. Tighten the drain plug with a new O-ring.
Attention. Make sure the drain plug is clean and a new o-ring is installed.
6. Fill with fresh engine oil.
Attention.
- When filling with oil, do not remove the dipstick.
- The amount of oil to be filled in depends on its temperature and on the duration of the oil drain. The given data can be used for reference only.
- Use only the dipstick to check the oil level.
7. Warm up the engine and check for oil leaks around the drain plug and oil filter.
8. Stop the engine and wait 10 minutes.
9. Check oil level.
