Note. The following procedures require a press, suitable mandrels and pipes.
Removing
1. On models of early years of release, give the nut securing the steering damper to the transverse torque rod, remove the washer. Detach the damper from the stem and set it aside.
2. On models of later years of release, give the nut on the end of the steering damper facing the transverse torque rod, holding the damper rod from turning with a wrench. Remove the washers and rubber bushings and move the damper to the side.
Note. On some models, the steering damper is not attached to the transverse torque rod, but to the vehicle chassis. In this case, the procedures of the first two paragraphs should be omitted.
3. Give a nut and a bolt of fastening of a cross jet bar to the forward bridge and the chassis. Remove the bar from the vehicle.
4. Check the cross torque rod bushings for signs of wear and damage. Replace defective bushings (see accompanying illustration):
1 - pipe
2 - mandrel
3 - transverse jet rod
- Support the rod under the sleeve to be replaced with a piece of pipe of suitable diameter (the sleeve must pass freely through the pipe).
- Using a tool whose mandrel will rest against the inner steel tube of the bushing, press the bushing out of the stem.
Note. The bushings have different inner diameters, so it is recommended to replace them one by one.
- Moisten the outer surface of the new bushing with soapy water and begin to gradually push the bushing into its seat using a piece of pipe that will rest against the outer steel tube of the bushing.
- Make sure the bushing is square and centered.
Installation
Installation is in the reverse order.
1. If bushings have been replaced, carefully check the condition of the axle stud and rod bolt. Replace worn components.
2. Install the cross torque rod on the car, install all fasteners (nuts, bolts, washers, rubber bushings).
3. Rock the car several times, then tighten the chassis nut with a force of 157÷167 Nm. Tighten the bridge nut with a force of 127÷167 Nm.
4. If necessary, firmly tighten the steering damper mounting nut.
