Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) Malfunction Indicator

After turning the ignition switch to the "ON" position, the anti-lock brake system indicator light comes on and goes out after a while. This means that the anti-lock brake system is working properly. If the anti-lock brake system indicator light does not go out when the engine is running or comes on while driving, this may indicate a malfunction of the anti-lock brake system and it is necessary to check it. Contact an authorized Nissan dealer to have the anti-lock brake system checked. If the ABS malfunctions, its anti-lock function is disabled. The braking system, however, remains fully functional. However, the system will not be able to prevent the wheels from locking when braking.

Brake system malfunction indicator

Attention.

• If the brake fluid level in the brake fluid reservoir is below the minimum mark, do not drive the vehicle until the system has been checked by an authorized Nissan dealer.
• Even if you think it is safe to continue driving, the vehicle should be towed to a repair facility because it may be dangerous to drive in this condition.
• When the engine is not running and/or the brake fluid level is low, the force on the brake pedal and its travel will increase; accordingly, the braking distance of the car will increase.

When the brake system malfunction indicator comes on, it indicates that the parking brake is not released, the brake fluid level in the reservoir is low, and there is a malfunction in the anti-lock braking system.

Parking brake indicator

The indicator comes on when the ignition switch is turned to the "ON" position. If the engine is running and the driver releases the parking brake, the visual brake indicator goes out. If the parking brake is not fully released, the brake indicator remains on. Make sure that the brake indicator goes out before driving.



Low Brake Fluid Warning Light

If the brake system malfunction indicator comes on while the engine is running or while driving and the parking brake is not applied, this may indicate that the brake fluid level in the reservoir is low. If the brake system malfunction indicator comes on while driving, stop as soon as possible, following traffic regulations. Turn off the engine and check the brake fluid level. If the brake fluid level has dropped below the minimum mark, add the required amount of brake fluid to bring it up to the standard. If the brake fluid level is not correct, contact an authorized Nissan dealer immediately.

Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) Malfunction Indicator

If the brake and anti-lock brake system warning lights remain on when the parking brake is released and the brake fluid level is normal, this may indicate a malfunction of the ABS system. Contact an authorized Nissan dealer immediately to have the system checked and, if necessary, repaired.

Low battery indicator

The low battery indicator comes on when the ignition switch is turned to the "ON" position. After the engine is started, the low battery indicator goes out. This indicates that the battery charging system is normal. If the low battery indicator does not go out with the engine running or while driving, this may indicate a malfunction of the battery charging system and it needs to be checked. If the low battery indicator comes on while driving, follow the road safety rules and stop as soon as possible. Stop the engine and check the condition of the alternator drive belt. If the alternator drive belt is not tight enough, is damaged or missing, the battery charging system requires repair. If the alternator drive belt is normal, but the low battery indicator remains on, have the charging system checked by an authorized Nissan dealer.

Caution: Do not continue driving the vehicle if the alternator drive belt is not sufficiently tensioned, or if the belt is damaged or missing.

Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Malfunction Indicator

Attention.

• Be careful not to get burned by the high temperature exhaust gases.
• Do not stop or park your vehicle in areas where flammable materials may come into contact with high-temperature exhaust system components (for example, on areas covered with dry grass, scraps of paper, rags or similar materials that can easily catch fire).
• If you continue driving at low speeds with the DPF indicator illuminated, the control system will automatically limit the engine speed and torque generated by the engine. In this case, you will have to change the engine oil early, and the process of burning off the solid particles accumulated in the DPF will have to be carried out at a Nissan dealer service center. Regeneration of the DPF is not included in the list of vehicle maintenance services performed under the Nissan warranty.
• For vehicles equipped with a diesel particulate filter, use only the recommended engine oil.

Caution: During the combustion of particulate matter, the diesel particulate filter reaches very high temperatures.

Some diesel engines are equipped with a diesel particulate filter (DPF), which is a device for removing solid carbon particles (soot) contained in the exhaust gases. For a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to work effectively, it must be periodically cleaned of accumulated carbon solids. This process is called particulate filter regeneration. This process is usually performed automatically and is not visible to the driver.

Necessary conditions for the implementation of the regeneration process

With frequent short trips with periodic stops and starts, the DPF can accumulate excessive amounts of particulate matter. When this occurs, the DPF indicator comes on to inform the driver that a special driving mode is required to regenerate the DPF. If the DPF indicator comes on, drive at a speed of at least 60 km/h (37 mph), after making sure that it is safe and permissible to do so, until the DPF indicator goes out. This process can take up to 30 minutes.

Disruption of the regeneration process

Failure to follow the driver's instructions when the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) indicator comes on may cause the DPF to become overloaded with particulate matter. In this case, the Malfunction Indicator Light (MI) will illuminate. This will require a visit to a Nissan dealer for a DPF Service Regeneration. In addition, the engine speed may also be limited to 3,000 rpm to protect the DPF.

Note: If forced regeneration of the DPF is required, contact an authorized Nissan dealer.

Electric Power Steering (EPAS) Malfunction Indicator

The indicator turns on when the ignition key is turned to the "ON" position. This means that the system is working properly.



If the indicator remains on after the engine is started, it means that the electric power steering is not functioning. You can still drive the car, but this is not recommended, since the effort on the steering wheel will be significantly higher than when the power steering is functioning normally.

Attention.

• If the EPAS power steering malfunction indicator comes on while the vehicle is in motion, stop the vehicle as soon as possible, following the road safety regulations.
• In some cases, external factors may cause the EPAS malfunction indicator to come on. If the indicator comes on, stop as soon as possible, observing road safety regulations. Turn off the ignition for about 20 seconds, then turn the ignition back on (the "ON" position). If the indicator remains on, contact an authorized Nissan dealer.

Low Engine Oil Pressure Warning Light

The low engine oil pressure indicator comes on when the ignition is turned on (ignition switch "ON" position). After the engine starts, the low engine oil pressure indicator goes out. This means that the oil pressure sensors are working properly. If the low engine oil pressure indicator comes on or flashes while the engine is running, this may mean that the oil pressure in the engine lubrication system is too low. Stop the vehicle as soon as possible, observing the rules and safety requirements of the road. Then stop the engine immediately and contact an authorized Nissan dealer.

Attention.

• Operating the engine with the low engine oil pressure indicator on may result in serious engine damage.
• The low engine oil pressure indicator is not intended to indicate low engine oil level. The engine oil level should be checked using the dipstick.

Note: Message "Oil level low" ("Low engine oil level") appears for five seconds after turning the ignition switch to the "ON" position.

Front passenger airbag deactivation indicator

When the ignition switch is turned to the "ON" position, the front passenger airbag off indicator "p" located on the center console comes on for approximately seven seconds after the ignition is turned on and then goes out. This indicates that the system is functioning properly.

The indicator shows the status of the front passenger airbag. If the airbag is deactivated, the indicator turns on and lights up continuously while the front passenger airbag on the front seat is in the deactivated state ("OFF").

Engine system malfunction indicator

Engine Malfunction Indicator Light - MI (orange)



The Malfunction Indicator Light (MI) comes on when the ignition switch is turned to the "ON" position. Once the engine is started, the Malfunction Indicator Light (MI) should go out. This means that the system is OK. If the light comes on and stays on or flashes while the engine is running, this may indicate a malfunction in the engine management system.

The MI indicator is constantly on

This indicates a malfunction of the engine management system. Contact an authorized Nissan dealer to have the system checked and repaired. You can drive to the service station without having towed.

MI indicator is blinking (for some vehicle versions)

Misfires have been detected that may cause damage to the engine management system. To avoid or reduce the risk of damage to the engine management system, follow these instructions:

• do not exceed the speed of 70 km/h;
• avoid sudden acceleration and braking;
• avoid driving on steep inclines;
• reduce the load on the vehicle or trailer if possible.

The MI indicator stopped blinking and started to glow constantly

Contact an authorized Nissan dealer to have the system checked and repaired. You can drive to the dealer without having towed.

Attention. Prolonged operation of the vehicle with the engine malfunction indicator on, delay in inspection and necessary repairs will inevitably lead to deterioration of the vehicle's traction and dynamic properties, increased fuel consumption and failure of the engine management system. In this case, the vehicle warranty may be voided.

Note: Improper engine management system adjustments may result in emissions levels exceeding local or state emission standards.

Engine system malfunction indicator (red) - for some vehicle versions

When the ignition switch is set to the "ON" position, this annunciator turns on. After the engine is started, the alarm should turn off. This indicates that the system is in good working order. If the warning light comes on and stays on while the engine is running, it may indicate a malfunction of the engine management system. Contact an authorized Nissan dealer service station to have the system checked and repaired. You can drive to the service station without towing the vehicle.

Attention. Prolonged operation of the vehicle with the engine malfunction indicator on, delay in inspection and necessary repairs will inevitably lead to deterioration of the vehicle's traction and dynamic properties, increased fuel consumption and failure of the engine management system. In this case, the vehicle warranty may be voided.

General fault indicator

The general fault indicator lights up whenever any fault message appears.

NATS System Warning Light (for some vehicle versions)

The indicator is flashing; if the key or ignition switch is turned to the position "LOCK", "OFF" or "ACC". Flashing indicator indicates that the car is equipped with the NATS* anti-theft system (immobilizer).
If the normal operation of the NATS system is disrupted, the indicator will remain illuminated continuously when the ignition switch is in the "ON" position.

Seat belt release warning light

This warning light alerts you that the driver's or front seat passenger's seat belt has not been fastened. This annunciator illuminates when the.ignition switch is set to the "ON" position. The warning light will turn off when the driver and passenger are in the front seat (if available) fasten their seat belts. There is also an audible warning to remind you that your seat belt is not fastened.

Airbag System (SRS) Malfunction Indicator

With the ignition switch in the "ON" position, the air bag system (SRS) malfunction warning light should illuminate for approximately seven seconds and then turn off. This will indicate that the airbag system is operational. If any of the following situations occur, the airbag system and seat belt pretensioners should be checked:

• the airbag malfunction indicator remains on after seven seconds of ignition on;
• airbag malfunction indicator flashing;
• the airbag malfunction indicator does not light at all.

Until the problem is checked and corrected, the air bag system and/or seat belt pretensioners may not function properly.

4WD system malfunction indicator (all-wheel drive versions)

The all-wheel drive (4WD) fault indicator lights up when the ignition is switched on ("ON" position). It should go out shortly after starting the engine. If a 4WD system malfunction occurs, or if there is a significant difference in the rotation speed or rolling radius of the front and rear wheels, the all-wheel drive system malfunction indicator will light up continuously or flash.

Attention.

• If the 4WD warning light comes on or flashes while the vehicle is in motion, the system will automatically switch from 4WD to 2WD. If this occurs, reduce your speed and have the system checked by an authorized Nissan dealer as soon as possible.
• Do not drive on hard and dry road surfaces with the all-wheel drive system in the "LOCK" mode.
• If the 4WD system malfunction indicator starts to flash while driving, proceed as follows.
• a) If the indicator flashes frequently (about twice a second), please stop the vehicle in compliance with road safety regulations and leave the engine idling. The transmission will switch to single-axle (2WD) drive mode to avoid damage to the 4WD all-wheel drive system. When the alarm goes off, you can continue driving.
• b) If the indicator flashes slowly (approximately once every two seconds), switch the system to 2WD mode and reduce the vehicle speed as quickly as possible.
• If the indicator continues to flash after this, have the system checked by an authorized Nissan dealer as soon as possible.

Water in fuel filter indicator (diesel engine)



If this indicator stays on or flashes at irregular intervals while the engine is running, it may indicate that there is water in the fuel filter. In this case, try to remove the water from the fuel filter or contact your Nissan dealer immediately.

Caution: Failure to drain the water from the fuel filter in a timely manner may cause serious engine damage. Contact an authorized Nissan dealer for service as soon as possible.
