Cylinder Head Cover Bolt Tightening Sequence

Removal
1. Disconnect the wires from the spark plugs and remove the wires from the clips on the cylinder head cover.

2. Loosen the clamps and disconnect the crankcase exhaust hoses from the cylinder head cover.
3. In the reverse order to that shown in Fig. Cylinder head cover bolt tightening sequence, unscrew the cylinder head cover mounting bolts, remove the bolts and washers.
4. Lift the cylinder head cover, remove the rubber gasket from the groove in the cover and the spark plug seals from the spark plug holes. On early engines, also remove the rubber plugs inserted into the semicircular recesses in the right wall of the cylinder head. On later engines, these plugs are made integral with the cylinder head cover gasket.
5. Check the condition of all rubber seals on the cover and replace if necessary.
Installation
1. Thoroughly clean the sealing surfaces of the cover and cylinder head, remove traces of oil.

2. Apply sealant to the cylinder head recesses. On early engines, place both semicircular plugs in the recesses so that the flat part of the plugs is flush with the plane of the cylinder head.

3. Place the gasket into the groove on the cover, making sure it is positioned correctly along its entire length.

4. Install the spark plug sealing rings. If necessary, secure the seals with a thin layer of sealant.

5. Apply sealant to the gasket approximately 1 cm on both sides of the edges of the semicircular recess under the rear camshaft journal cover.

6. Carefully install the cylinder head cover into place, making sure that the rubber seals on the cover do not move.

7. Make sure the cover is installed correctly, tighten the bolts with washers. Tighten the cover bolts in the specified sequence to the specified torque.
8. Attach the hoses to the lid.
9. Attach the wires to the spark plugs and insert the wires into the brackets.
