Removing
Lower chain tensioner
1. Put the car on the handbrake, raise the front of the car and place it on stands.
2. Working from below, remove the two mounting bolts and remove the lower chain tensioner. Remove the gasket, paying attention to its original position.
Attention! When removing the tensioner, rotation of the crankshaft is not allowed.
Upper chain tensioner
1. Remove the three mounting bolts and remove the bracket for the right support of the power unit.
2. Remove the bolts and nuts and remove the cover of the driven camshaft sprockets, remove the gasket (if provided).
3. On older engines, move the chain tensioner aside and secure with the hook located on the side of the shoe.
4. On late production engines, move the chain tensioner aside and secure with a bar, laying the bar between the shoe and the chain.
5. Turn away two bolts and remove a tensioner, having taken it from a head of cylinders.
Attention! When removing the tensioner, rotation of the crankshaft is not allowed.
Lower chain damper
1. Remove the camshaft chains (see subsection 3.1.1.7).
2. Loosen the two bolts and remove the lower chain guide.
Lower chain tensioner shoe
1. Remove front cover (see subsection 3.1.1.6).
2. Loosen the axle bolt and remove the lower chain tensioner shoe.
Upper chain guide (for older engines)
1. Remove the cylinder head cover (see subsection 3.1.1.4).
2. Loosen the two bolts and remove the guide bar.
Upper chain guide (for older engines)
1. Remove the camshaft sprocket inspection cover.
2. Loosen two screws (indicated by arrows) and remove the upper chain guide.
Camshaft sprockets
1. Set the piston of the 1st cylinder to the TDC of the compression stroke.
2. Remove the cylinder head cover.
3. Remove the camshaft sprocket cover.
4. Remove the camshaft sprockets and upper chain.
Intermediate sprocket and crankshaft drive sprocket
Remove drive chains and sprockets (see subsection 3.1.1.7).
Status check
See subsection 3.1.1.7.
Installation
Lower chain tensioner
1. Make sure the split surfaces of the tensioner and cover are dry and clean.
2. Install a new gasket, orienting so that the notch on the gasket is aligned with the tensioner oil hole.
3. Install the tensioner and tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
Upper chain tensioner
1. On early production vehicles, the tensioner shoe must be swept aside and secured with a hook. Install the tensioner assembly to the cylinder head. Tighten the tensioner mounting bolts to the specified torque, remove the hook (indicated by an arrow). Make sure that the tensioner shoe pad is firmly against the chain.
2. On cars of later releases, take aside the tensioner block and fix it with a bar. Install the tensioner and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Remove the bar and make sure that the tensioner shoe shoe rests against the chain with force.
3. Check that the sealing surfaces of the camshaft sprocket inspection cover and cylinder head are clean and free from moisture and oil. If a gasket was installed on the cover, then replace the gasket by installing it on the cylinder head. If the seal was provided by a sealant, then apply it around the entire perimeter of the cover in a continuous layer. Install the cover and tighten the bolts and nuts to the specified torque.
4. Install the bracket on the right support of the power unit and tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
Lower chain damper
1. Establish a damper on the block of cylinders.
2. Tighten the mounting bolts to the specified torque.
3. Install chains.
Lower chain tensioner shoe
1. Install the shoe on the cylinder block.
2. Tighten the axle bolt to the specified torque.
3. Install the front cover.
Upper chain guide (for older engines)
1. Install the upper chain guide to the cylinder head.
2. Tighten the mounting bolts to the specified torque.
3. Install the cylinder head cover.
Upper chain guide (for older engines)
1. Install the upper chain guide to the cylinder head.
2. Tighten the mounting bolts to the specified torque.
3. Install the camshaft sprocket cover.
Camshaft driven sprockets
1. Install the camshaft sprockets and top chain.
2. On engines of early releases, install the guide bar and the upper chain guide, tighten all the bolts with the specified torque.
3. Install the top chain tensioner.
4. Install the cylinder head cover.
Intermediate sprocket and crankshaft drive sprocket
Install chains and sprockets.
