The front wheels of the car are equipped with disc brakes, the rear wheels with drum brakes (with vertical shoe arrangement). It is possible to equip all wheels with disc mechanisms. For safety reasons, the front and rear brake circuits are separated and operate independently of each other.
The hydraulic system of some models is equipped with a vehicle load-sensitive valve - a pressure regulator, which helps prevent premature locking of the rear wheels.
The valve is installed under the bottom of the car and is connected by an extension spring to the rear axle.
Disc brake assemblies consist of a brake disc mounted on the wheel hub and a caliper located on the steering knuckle (front mechanisms), or on the rear axle assembly. Disc brakes do not require adjustment.
Drum mechanisms consist of a two-way wheel cylinder, the pistons of which act on the upper ends of the brake shoes. The lower parts of the shoes are fixed in place. Adjustment of the drum mechanisms is performed automatically during braking.
The parking brake is a drum assembly mounted at the rear of the transmission and is cable-actuated.

The disc brakes on later (1992 and later) 4.2L EFI models are modified with 2-piston calipers and larger diameter brake discs. However, all of the following repair and maintenance procedures remain the same. The 2-piston caliper components are shown in the accompanying illustration.
