Removal
1. Disconnect the battery from ground.
2. Remove the steering wheel.
3. Remove the switches with levers (see subsection 14.4).
4. Disconnect the connector from the ignition switch.
5. Remove the lower panel from the driver's side.
6. Remove and tighten the column seal in the engine compartment bulkhead.
7. Remove the metal cover from the engine compartment partition by unscrewing three nuts (on car parts).
8. Place the steering wheel on and rotate the shaft to access the universal joint bolt.
9. Loosen the hinge bolt.
10. Remove the two upper bolts and two lower nuts and remove the column.
Examination
1. Check for shaft deformation, integrity of the safety double-cone connection, replace the column if necessary.
2. Check the condition of the bearings and bushings, the play of the shaft and joints.
3. Replace the column at the slightest sign of wear or damage.
4. Measure the length of the column from the end to the hinge pin.
5. If the length is not within the standard, replace the column.
Installation
1. Put the cover and seal on the column, secure the seal with a clamp (if provided).
2. Install the column and insert it into the cardan joint so that the clamp bolt, when tightened, rests against the recess in the shaft at the splined end of the shaft.
3. Tighten the two top bolts and two bottom nuts to the specified torque.
4. Tighten the universal joint bolt.
5. Put the cover on and tighten the three nuts (on car parts).
6. Place the cover on the lid and secure with a clamp.
7. Install the bottom panel.
8. Connect the connector to the ignition switch.
9. Install the toggle switches.
10. Install the steering wheel.
11. Connect the battery to ground.
