Note. A complete inspection and overhaul of the steering pump are procedures that are beyond the skill of the average amateur mechanic. The cost of a repair kit, plus the time involved, usually outweighs the cost of a used replacement unit. In view of the foregoing, the drafters of this manual recommend that in the event of a pump failure, simply replace it. For those who decide to try their hand at repairing the steering pump, the authors provide an explanatory illustration and a list of basic technical requirements (see tables of sizes and adjustments at the end of the guide).
Steering pump components
1 - cover; 2 - mesh filter; 3 - bolt; 4 - cuff; 5 - reservoir; 6 - bracket; 7 - body; 8 - gasket; 9 - pins; 10 - stator ring; 11 - rotor; 12 - blades; 13 - plate; 14 - sealing rings; 15 - spring; 16 - connector; 17 - spool; 18 - stuffing box; 19 - shaft with bearing; 20 - retaining ring; 21 - pulley; 22 - nut; 23 - puck
Removing
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
2. Clean the outside of the pump to remove any dirt and grease from it to prevent it from entering the hydraulic system when dismantling the pump.
3. Loosen the clamp on the return line pump (the appearance of the steering pump is shown in the accompanying illustration). Hold a drain pan under the fitting to collect spilled liquid.
1 - tank; 2 - return line; 3 - pressure line; 4 - bracket; 5 - pulley; 6 - pump
4. Loosen the hollow bolt of the pressure line fitting connector and continue draining the liquid into the container. Secure the disconnected lines away from the work area by plugging their open ends to prevent dirt from entering the system.
5. Give the adjusting locknut, loosen the fixing and adjusting bolts. Remove the drive belt from the pump.
6. Turn out adjusting and fixing bolts of the pump and remove assembly of the last from the car.
Installation
Installation is in the reverse order.
1. Replace the copper sealing washers and securely tighten the in-line connector banjo bolt.
2. Adjust the drive belt tension.
3. Bleed the hydraulic system.
