Note: A complete inspection and overhaul of the steering pump are procedures beyond the skill level of the average amateur mechanic. The cost of a repair kit, plus the time involved, usually outweighs the cost of a replacement used unit. In view of the above, the authors of this Guide recommend that if the pump fails, simply replace it. Removal
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
2. Clean the outside of the pump to remove any dirt or grease to prevent it from getting into the hydraulic system when the pump is removed.
3. Loosen the clamp securing the return line pump (the appearance of the steering pump is shown in the accompanying illustration). To collect any spilled liquid, hold a drain container under the nozzle.

4. Loosen the hollow bolt of the pressure line fitting and continue draining the fluid into the container. Secure the disconnected lines away from the work area, plugging their open ends to prevent dirt from entering the system.
5. Loosen the adjusting lock nut, loosen the mounting and adjusting bolts. Remove the drive belt from the pump.

6. Unscrew the adjusting and fastening bolts of the pump and remove the latter assembly from the vehicle.
Installation
Installation is carried out in reverse order.
1. Replace the copper sealing washers and tighten the hollow bolt of the nipple connector securely.
2. Adjust the drive belt tension.
3. Bleed the hydraulic system.
