The moment of the injection pump start can be checked on the installed or removed engine. Here is a description of the check on the installed engine. For the check you will need a measuring device with a nozzle for installation in the pump.
Verification conditions
The toothed belt is tensioned.
The valve timing mechanism is adjusted correctly.
The engine is warmed up to operating temperature. The coolant temperature gauge needle points to the middle of the scale.
Examination
1. Turn off the ignition.
2. Turn the cold starter rods clockwise.

3. Insert a small wooden block (1), 15 mm thick, between the cold starter plunger and the drive rod.
4. Turn the crankshaft two revolutions in the direction of engine rotation to return the cold start device to its normal state.

5. Set the crankshaft to the TDC position of the piston of the 1st cylinder. For this, the white mark (2) should be opposite the arrow (3).

6. Loosen the union nuts of the high-pressure fuel line on the pump with a slotted socket wrench. At the same time, hold the valve with a regular wrench.
7. Unscrew the threaded plug (test hole) on the fuel injection pump cover.

8. Instead of the plug, screw in a nozzle with a dial measuring device (measurement range 0–3.0 mm) (4), for example, NISSAN KV-11.229.352.
9. Adjust the scale so that the arrow is between 1.0 and 2.0 mm.
10. Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise 20°–25° before TDC. Check that the nozzle is installed correctly. Set the measuring instrument scale to 0 mm.
11. Turn the crankshaft clockwise and set it to 9° after TDC. The yellow mark (1) is now opposite the pointer (3) (see fig above). The measuring device should now show the stroke of the injection pump piston. The required value is 0.79–0.85 mm.
Attention! If the measured value is within the permissible limits, no further adjustment is required. If a new adjustment is made, the value should be set to 0.82 mm.
Adjustment
1. If the measured value does not match the required value, slightly loosen the 4 fuel injection pump mounting nuts and bolts.

2. Turn the pump until the instrument shows the required value.
3. The measured value is less than required: turn the pump housing away from the motor (5).
4. The measured value is greater than required: turn the pump housing towards the motor (6).

5. Tighten the fuel injection pump mounting bolts and nuts alternately.
6. Recheck the feed start time and adjust if necessary.
7. Tighten the pump mounting nuts to 15 Nm and the bolts to 55 Nm.
8. Unscrew the nozzle with the measuring device and screw on the plug with a new gasket with a torque of 15 N·m. If the plug is not tight, tighten it up to 20 N·m.
9. Tighten the high-pressure fuel lines with a torque of 25 Nm.
10. Remove air from the fuel system.
