Power Steering — General Information (Nissan Micra K12)

The operation of the electric power steering (EPAS), built into the steering column, is controlled by a special unit based on data on the force and angle of rotation of the steering wheel, as well as the speed of the car.

If EPAS operates for a long period, the EPAS control unit reduces its output to prevent the electric motor from overheating.

If a fault occurs in the EPAS electrical circuit, the control unit switches to emergency mode, disconnecting the electric motor. At the same time, the corresponding K/L is switched on on the instrument panel. Information about the fault can be obtained using a diagnostic device, since the EPAS control unit is connected to the CAN bus.

To increase the torque transmitted to the steering shaft from the EPAS electric motor, a reduction gear is built into the steering column assembly.
