General description
If during self-diagnosis faults are detected in the main sensors required for the operation of the ECCS unit, fault codes are written into the control unit memory, which simplifies fault diagnosis. Faults are read in two ways: using the CONSULT service tester and by flashing the engine warning lamp in the instrument cluster.
There are two diagnostic modes. Mode 1 is the normal state, mode 2 is the diagnostic mode or oxygen sensor (O2) monitoring.
Description of the self-diagnostic system operation
Self-diagnosis mode 2 is activated after turning the ignition key to the ON position (the engine is not working) and short circuits of the diagnostic connector contacts SNK and IGN for 2 seconds (right side of the lower section of the instrument panel on the driver's side).
Self-diagnosis is performed after turning the ignition key to the ON position (self-diagnosis mode 2).
After starting the engine from self-diagnostic mode, it switches to the O2 sensor test mode (checking the O ₂ sensor in mode 2).
After turning the ignition key to the OFF position, it automatically returns to mode 1 (normal state).


Operating modes of the engine malfunction indicator lamp
Mode 1 - lamp test

The lamp should light when the ignition key is turned to the ON position.
The lamp should go out after the engine starts.
Mode 1 - Fault indication
When one of the following conditions occurs, the indicator lamp lights up in the malfunction warning mode.
During self-diagnosis, a malfunction of the air mass flow sensor is detected.
During self-diagnosis, a malfunction of the coolant temperature sensor is detected.
During self-diagnosis, a malfunction of the throttle sensor is detected.
During self-diagnosis, a malfunction of the oxygen sensor is detected.
During self-diagnosis, a malfunction of the crankshaft angle sensor is detected.
During self-diagnosis, a malfunction of the EGR valve is detected.
During self-diagnosis, a malfunction of the vehicle speed sensor is detected.
During self-diagnosis, engine overheating is detected.

Mode 2 - self-diagnosis

The faulty system code is determined by the flashing of the engine malfunction indicator lamp.
If there are no faults, the code "0000" is displayed.
Mode 2 - oxygen sensor test
Flashing of the engine malfunction indicator lamp in this mode indicates the ratio of components in the fuel-air mixture.

After warming up the engine, check at 2000 rpm whether the control lamp lights up 5 times or more within 10 seconds. [Furthermore, the ratio of components in the fuel-air mixture at idle speed is adjusted with feedback (closed loop control)].
When feedback control works:
When the oxygen sensor output signal is high (the mixture is enriched): The lamp goes out When the output signal of the oxygen sensor is low (the mixture is lean): the lamp is on
When feedback control is locked: the state that existed immediately before entering this mode is retained.
At the moment of termination of feedback control: the lamp goes out.
