Note. Some of the older tachometers, stroboscopes and analyzers of ignition parameters are not suitable for use in electronic ignition systems. Before proceeding with the checks, make sure that the diagnostic equipment at your disposal is suitable.
Do not accidentally ground the tachometer wire to ground to avoid damage to the measuring equipment or components of the ignition system.
Stroboscope
Connect the stroboscope to the spark plug wire of the first cylinder (follow the manufacturer's instructions). The order of numbering of cylinders and the direction of rotation of the distributor of the 4.2 l engine are shown in the accompanying illustration.
Note. Never disconnect the car's battery-powered strobe light while the engine is running, as a power surge could damage the alternator.
Do not open the BB wires to avoid damage to the components of the ignition system.
Tachometer
1. Make sure that the available tachometer is suitable for checking the ignition system of your car.
2. On systems with a contact breaker, connect the tachometer signal probe to the negative terminal of the ignition coil. Make further connections in accordance with the instrument manufacturer's instructions.
3. In systems with electronic ignition, equipped with a special connector for connecting a tachometer, connect the signal probe of the device to this connector. Make further connections in accordance with the instrument manufacturer's instructions.
Duration meter (by angle) closed state of the breaker contacts
It is possible to check the duration of the closed state of the breaker contacts only using this device. On models with electronic ignition, this parameter cannot be adjusted.
Connect the signal probe of the device to the negative terminal of the ignition coil. Make further connections in accordance with the instrument manufacturer's instructions.
