Note: Some older style tachometers, stroboscopes and ignition analyzers are not suitable for use with electronic ignition systems. Before performing any tests, make sure that your diagnostic equipment is suitable.
Do not accidentally ground the tachometer wire to ground to avoid damage to the measuring equipment or ignition system components.
Stroboscope
Connect the strobe light to the spark plug wire of the first cylinder (follow the manufacturer's instructions). The cylinder numbering order and direction of rotation of the distributor of the 4.2L engine are shown in the accompanying illustration.
Note: Never disconnect the strobe light from the vehicle battery while the engine is running, as the voltage surge may damage the alternator.
Do not allow the high voltage wires to become disconnected to avoid damage to ignition system components.
Tachometer
1. Make sure that the tachometer you have is suitable for testing your vehicle's ignition system.
2. For systems with a contact breaker, connect the tachometer signal probe to the negative terminal of the ignition coil. Make further connections in accordance with the instrument manufacturer's instructions.

3. In systems with electronic ignition equipped with a special connector for connecting a tachometer, connect the signal probe of the device to this connector. Make further connections in accordance with the instructions of the device manufacturer.
Measuring the duration (by angle) of the closed state of the breaker contacts
It is possible to check the duration of the closed state of the breaker contacts only using this device. On models with electronic ignition, this parameter is not subject to adjustment.
Connect the instrument's signal probe to the negative terminal of the ignition coil. Make further connections in accordance with the instrument manufacturer's instructions.
