Types of wear of main and connecting rod bearings
A. Scratches due to ingress of dirt; B. Insufficient lubrication, local wiping; C. Incorrect installation of bearings; F. Fatigue wear; D. Tapering of the journals, wiping of the bearing coating from the entire surface along the length of the bearing; E. The formation of a shoulder on the edge of the bearing
1. Used bearings should be stored at their place of installation for a thorough inspection, as wear marks on these parts will restore the general condition of the engine. Bearing shells are divided into size groups according to the thickness indicated by color marking.
2. Causes of failure of crankshaft bearings are insufficient lubrication, the presence of dirt and foreign particles, engine overload and corrosion. Regardless of the cause that caused the destruction of the bearings, it should be eliminated before the final assembly of the engine.
3. Remove the bearings from the cylinder block and lay the liners on a clean surface in the order in which they were installed.
4. To prevent accelerated wear due to contamination, keep the engine assembly clean. During operation, it is recommended to change the oil and filters more often.
5. With insufficient lubrication, the bearing coating material is wiped off the steel base, the bearing is chipped from overheating (there is a bluish tint).
6. When driving in heavy modes for the engine (wide open throttle, or low speed in high gear) there is a detachment of the bearing coating from the steel base in the form of small particles, the bearings are subjected to fatigue wear.
7. Frequent trips over short distances can cause corrosive wear of the bearings, because due to insufficient warming up, condensed moisture does not have time to be removed.
8. Incorrect installation of bearings during assembly also leads to premature wear. If the clearance in the bearings is less than normal, then their lubrication is difficult, which leads to wear as well as due to "oil starvation".
9. When assembling, do not touch the earmold surfaces with your fingers.
10. Inserts of main and connecting rod bearings during major repairs are subject to mandatory replacement.
