Visual inspection of the camshaft
Check for nicks and wear.
If defects are found, replace the camshaft.
Camshaft runout
Place the camshaft on prisms under the main journals #1 and #5.
Install the indicator probe vertically on neck #3.
Rotate the camshaft by hand in one direction and record the maximum deflection of the indicator needle.
The beat is equal to ½ of the deflection of the indicator needle.
- Limit runout: 0.05 mm
Camshaft lobe height
Measure the cam height with a micrometer.
Standard Height:
- Inlet: 39.6±0.095mm
- Outlet: 40.0 + 0.095 mm
Oil clearance in the camshaft journals
Outer diameter of camshaft journals
Measure the diameters of the camshaft journals with a micrometer.
Standard diameter:
- Neck #1: 30.435-30.455 mm
- Necks ##2-5: 23.935-23.955 mm
Inner diameter of camshaft brackets
Tighten the camshaft bracket bolts to the correct torque.
Measure the inside diameter of the camshaft bracket with an inside gauge.
Standard diameter:
- Bracket 1: 30.500-30.521 mm
- Brackets 2-5: 24.000-24.021 mm
Calculation of the oil clearance in the camshaft journals
(Oil clearance) = (Bracket inner diameter) - (Neck outside diameter)
- Standard clearance: 0.045-0.086mm
If the oil clearance in the camshaft journals is greater than the specification, look at the measurements of the diameters of each part and replace the cylinder head assembly and (or) camshaft.
Note: Because Since the camshaft brackets are manufactured together with the cylinder head, they cannot be replaced individually.
Camshaft end play
Install the indicator to the front end of the camshaft and measure the end play by moving the camshaft back and forth in the axial direction.
- Standard backlash: 0.070-0.148 mm
- Limit play: 0.24 mm
If the play is greater than the limit, replace the camshaft and recheck.
If the end play is greater than specification on recheck, replace the cylinder head.
Camshaft sprocket runout
Use a dial gauge to measure the runout of the camshaft sprocket.
- Limit runout: 0.15 mm
Visual inspection of valve lifters
Check the valve lifters for scoring and wear. If defects are found, replace the pusher.
Visual inspection of shims
Check the shims for nicks and wear at the cam contact. If defects are found, replace the washer.
Valve lifter clearance
Measuring the outer diameter of the pusher
Using a micrometer, measure the outside diameter of the tappet.
- Standard diameter: 29.960-29.975mm
Valve tappet hole diameter
Using an inside gauge, measure the diameter of the tappet hole in the cylinder head.
- Standard diameter: 30.000-30.021mm
Valve lifter clearance calculation
(Gap) = (Cylinder head bore diameter) - (Pusher diameter)
- Standard clearance: 0.025-0.061mm
If the clearance is not within specification, look at the diameter measurements and replace the cylinder head and (or) valve lifter.
