This Chapter examines the components of the vehicle transmission line, such as the gearbox (manual (RCPP) and automatic, considered together with the rotation converter and referred to below as an automatic transmission (AT)), transfer case and cardan shafts. Clutch assembly for models equipped with manual transmission is considered separately.
Models 4.2L
The 4.2L carburetor models are equipped with the FS5R50A manual transmission with five forward gears and one reverse gear, all of which (including the back) synchronized.
All driven gears are helical and are in constant engagement with the gears of the intermediate shaft. The gears of the first, second, third and reverse gears are mounted on roller bearings on the driven shaft. The fifth gear gear is also mounted on a roller bearing on the intermediate shaft. The intermediate gear of the reverse gear is mounted on a separate shaft by means of roller bearings.
In order to minimize the dead play of the gear block, a spring-loaded toothed ring is installed in the front part of the intermediate shaft.
Gear shifting is accomplished by coupling the pinion with the synchronizer assembly by engaging the internal splines of the synchronizer clutch with the synchronizer teeth of the corresponding gear. Synchronization is achieved when the synchronizer ring contacts the cone on the pinion wall, causing the pinion and synchronizer assembly to rotate at the same speed, ensuring smooth shifting.
The primary shaft rotates in a ball bearing located at the front of the gearbox and contains a roller bearing into which the front journal of the driven shaft enters. The rear of the primary shaft rests on two ball bearings, one of which is located in the gearbox housing, and the second in the extension casing.
A removable cover is attached to the left wall of the transmission housing, which is used to remove/install the power take-off unit (PTO).
Later model years of the 4.2L EFI use a modified FS5R50A transmission with revised gear ratios (see size and adjustment tables at the end of the Manual). Here, the number of teeth of the drive gear of the primary shaft is increased to 27, and the driven gear of the intermediate shaft is reduced to 34. The first and third gears are equipped with synchronizers with double locking rings.
3.0L models
The 3.0 l model is also equipped with a fully synchronized FS5R30A manual transmission with five forward gears and one reverse gear.
The forward gears are helical and are in constant engagement with the intermediate shaft gear group. The first, second and third gears are mounted on roller bearings on the driven shaft of the gearbox, the fifth gear is also mounted on a roller bearing on the intermediate shaft. The reverse gear intermediate gear is located on a separate shaft and is equipped with two roller bearings.
Synchronization during gear shifting is achieved in the same way as in the FS5R50A boxes of 4.2 l models.
