Attention:
To reduce the health hazard of dust particles from the brake unit, clean the drum and support plate with a vacuum cleaner. Do not blow with compressed air.
Make sure the parking brake is fully released.
Removing
Remove the wheel, release the parking brake and remove the brake drum.
If the brake drum cannot be removed, follow these steps:
(1) As shown in the figure, remove the plug from the hole in the support shield (hole on the side of the working cylinder) and use a screwdriver to turn the adjuster in the direction of the arrow to separate the shoes from the drum.
(2) If the brake drum and wheel hub are stuck, install 2 bolts (8 mm) into the threaded holes on the drum and alternately tighten them until the drum separates.
Examination
Check before and after removal, if a malfunction is found, replace the relevant components.
Perform a visual inspection to check for excessive wear and damage to the friction lining and flaking of the friction material.
Check the thickness of the friction lining using a ruler, etc.
- Standard Thickness: 5.2mm
- Limit wear: 1.5 mm
Check for excessive wear and damage in the sliding area of the brake pad?
Check if the tension of the return spring is weakened?
Check if the regulator is working properly?
Visually check for excessive wear, cracks or damage on the inside of the drum.
Check the inner diameter of the drum with a vernier caliper.
- Standard inner diameter: 260.0mm
- Limit inner diameter: 261.5 mm
Visually check for damage, cracks or deformation on the support plate.
Use a wrench to check if the support plate mounting bolts are loose.
Installation
Apply special brake lubricant (Nissan KRF0000005) on the support shield and the sliding area of the brake shoe in the places indicated by arrows.
If the operating lever was removed, install it as follows:
(1) Apply special brake lubricant (Nissan KRF0000005) to the sliding area of the working lever. Install the working lever and conical washer on the brake shoe.
(2) When installing the retaining ring on the operating lever, caulk the ends of the retaining ring.
Caution: Do not reuse retaining ring.
If the regulator has been disassembled, apply Nissan brake grease to the threads (KRF0000005), determine the components for the left and right wheels, and install.
- Right rear wheel: groove (on the image *): absent
- Thread direction: right
- Left rear wheel: groove (on the image *): available
- Thread direction: left
After assembly, check that all components are installed correctly. Measure the inner diameter of the drum and spread the adjuster so that the diameter of the central part of the shoe is 0.45-0.65 mm smaller than the inner diameter of the drum.
Install the brake drum and fix with wheel nuts, adjust the clearance in the brake shoes. The clearance in the pads is adjusted automatically as follows. Start the engine and repeatedly press the brake pedal, creating a vacuum in the booster.
Caution: Do not manually adjust the regulator unless the procedure is specified.
